[MBO] September 2019

This is the September 2019 entry of Metagame Build Orders

Vs. Protoss

We know Maru used the same build (with minor adjustments) against Trap in the last GSL semi final. People attribute his defeat against Trap to his lack of diversity in builds and strategies. But I believe his decision has much to do with the state of the match up and the map pool (for reference). Nevertheless, his build is very solid for ladder games.

Maru always starts with a 16 Refinery Reaper expand into 1-1-1, and then he puts down two more Barracks for a 3-1-1 Stim and Medivac move out timing. Although he uses essentially the same build, it is still worth pointing out the notable differences.

Game 1: Cyclone and Viking are produced for initial defense against Stargate. Then, he gets a Raven. No Siege Tank production, and the Factory gets a Reactor for Widow Mine production.

Game 2: Same as game 1. He was producing a Siege Tank after the Cyclone, but he cancelled it. This was because Terran couldn’t scout Protoss on that map. A Siege Tank is a good precaution against Twilight Council tech.

Game 3: Same as previous game. Made a Siege Tank this time against Twilight Council tech, which is a popular option on that map.

Game 4: Irrelevant.

Game 5: Replaced Cyclone and Viking with a Widow Mine drop.

16 – Refinery
@100% Barracks – Reaper and Orbital Command
@400 mineral – Command Centre (@100% – Orbital Command)

@100 gas – Factory
@100% Marine – Reactor
@75 mineral – Refinery
@100% Factory – Starport; Tech Lab on Factory
@100% Reactor – 2x Marine (constant Marine production)

@100% 2x Reactor – 2x Medivac and 2x Widow Mine

Vs. Terran

I mentioned in a recent article that 16 Refinery Reaper expand is a good option in TvT now. As I said, if everyone goes for the same opening, getting a quick third Command Centre is an excellent choice.

14 – Supply Depot
16 – Barracks
16 – Refinery
@100% Barracks – Reaper and Orbital Command
@400 mineral – Command Centre (@100% – Orbital Command)
@100 mineral – Supply Depot
@100% Reaper – Marine
@100 gas – Factory
@100% Marine – Reactor
@400 mineral – Command Centre
@100% Factory – Tech Lab
@75 mineral – Refinery
@100% Tech Lab – Cyclone
@100 gas – Starport

The key point is to take only one gas and put down a third Command Centre. The next 100 gas should be spent on a Cyclone and not a Starport. Once you put down the Starport, you go back to a standard 1-1-1. As per current metagame, you get Ravens and Siege Tanks.

Vs. Zerg

Battlecruiser is still popular. You almost always see pros use it at least once in a series. It is a decent option because the maps are big.

14 – Supply Depot
16 – Barracks
16 – Refinery
@100% Barracks – Reaper and Orbital Command
@400 mineral – Command Centre (@100% – Orbital Command)
@100 mineral – Supply Depot
@100% Reaper – Marine
@100 mineral – Bunker
@100 gas – Factory
@100% Marine – Reactor
@75 gas – Refinery
@100% Factory – Starport; Swap Factory on Reactor for 2x Hellion; Supply Depot
Build Supply Depot accordingly hereafter
@100% 2x Hellion – 2x Hellion
@100% Starport – Fusion Core and Viking
@100% Viking – Tech Lab
@400 mineral – Command Centre
@100% Fusion Core – Battlecruiser

You can do whatever you want after that. You put down two Barracks for bio or two Factories for mech. You can decide if you want to continue to make Battlecruisers. I recommend making two or three even if you do not want to use Battlecruisers as part of your main composition.
